Speaker Series Overview

The Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group-USA (DSMIG-USA®) Speaker Series consists of webinars and enduring materials designed to share knowledge and experience related to the care of children and adults with Down syndrome and clinical research related to Down syndrome. The intended audience includes primary care physicians, specialty physicians, advanced practice providers, psychologists, dietitians, occupational and physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, genetic counselors, research scientists, residents, and trainees. The education includes live webinars that will be recorded and posted later as enduring materials. There will be a separate registration for the enduring programs.

Treatment Strategies and Recommendations for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Down Syndrome: Physical Activity and Exercise Benefits and Recommendations

Clinical Objectives:

  1. Provide background on prevalence of inactivity and low fitness levels in individuals with Down syndrome, highlighting the importance of this topic. 
  2. Review recommendations and research findings regarding physical activity and exercise as part of treatment of overweight and obesity for individuals with Down syndrome. 
  3. Understand the DS-specific benefits of physical activity and exercise. 
  4. Discuss practical strategies on how to increase physical activity levels and exercise engagement specifically for individuals with Down syndrome. 
  5. Introduce practical PT-based exercise recommendations for purposeful movement.
